John Cameron, my Great Grandfather was born in the parish of Cumlodden & Minnard situated on the western side of Loch Fynne, Argyle, Scotland. Born to the local gamekeeper Allan Cameron and his wife Janet (Jessie) McDonald, John immediately had the desire to follow in his father's footsteps as a Gamekeeper but his ambitions were not realised until some 30 years into his life, not before though he had made a good name for himself within the wrestling circuits of Lanarkshire and beyond.

I am fortunate enough to have obtained from my Grandfather prior to his death my Great Grandfathers wrestling diary, some extracts from which are as follows:

During his wrestling days John won many bouts. Here he is seen proudly displaying the championship belt he won and retained. The belt is still in the family, having been passed down generation after generation.

It was at the age of 30 when he finally realised his true ambition, to gain employment as a gamekeeper and follow in the traditions of his father, his father's father and many more of his predecessors. His first appointment was with the BARR family as single handed keeper on a small estate at Harburn, near West Calder, Midlothian. He stayed there for 11 years before being offered another keepering job by the then Widow Robertson at Burnside estate, by Forfar, Angus. There he was to stay for the remainder of his life.

This is John in later life…. Probably taken on Burnside estate where he, my grandfather, my father and myself spent the best days of our lives. The estate is now under new management and continues to thrive… I look back with great fondness to the childhood days spent berry picking, shooting, snaring rabbits, taking honey from the bee hives… those days are gone now but will remain in my memory for many a year to come. In addition to the wrestling diary there were a number of "references" written by previous employers etc.
